“Stopping the Mind”: Beyond Appearances #2

If we wish to change the attitudes of the mind, we have to become able to discern the “old” from the “new mind”, namely, the conditioned from the unconditioned mind. It’s not that we are speaking here about “two kinds of mind”, but two different levels of using our mind: an “untrained” and a “trained” one.

Indeed, mind itself is inherently pure, clear, and bright, but it’s continuously contaminated by the old limits that fill it, denying every possibility to irradiate this brightness. In an ordinary state, mind is obscured and disturbed; it’s not free to express its full potentials because it acts in accordance with the states that influence it.

To renew consciousness, the first thing to do is to look deep into our mind and life itself and notice that this life is not stagnant, it’s always different, always new. Life flows and floats continuously, so if we sink our awareness with it, it will be able to renew and flow with life.

Indeed, if all things would be unchangeable there wouldn’t be any possibility of renewal, all would remain “old” and stagnant forever. But, fortunately, it is not so.

Everything changes for better or worse, dependently from our understanding. In order to renew our consciousness we have to become aware of every activity, emotion, thought, sensation and feeling.

It could seem an arduous and demanding task to be constantly aware of every moment during our daily life. Indeed, when it’s asked of someone to develop this skill, he’ll find every kind of excuse to remain unconscious. Over that, awareness is considered to be a duty, a weight, probably even a limitation to our “naturalness”, but this is totally wrong, a product of the conditioned field of our mind: once we achieve the possibility to be aware during a whole day, only then do we become really alive and we can find our naturalness that, ordinarily, we don’t express, even if we are convinced of the opposite.

If we wish a shift in ourselves, if we wish a development of our consciousness, an expression of our true self, if we wish to live our life fully and without limitations, we must learn to distinguish what is essential and what is superfluous in our life. But without attention and awareness, this kind of understanding can’t exist.

What are we doing when we are unaware? Do we “think”, imagine, remain stuck in memories, fantasies and daydreams? What is more satisfying, chase the illusory pleasures or the understanding and direct experience of things as they really are?

It’s not enough and it’s even not necessary to read books in order to know ourselves, to renew our consciousness. The only thing to do is to develop fully, attention towards ourselves and what is happening right now, moment to moment, both inside and outside of us. We’ll continue to act, sense, feel all the things we ordinarily do in our life, but with a “slight” difference, an essential factor: a clear awareness.

Consciousness can be renewed not through perceptions conditioned by our thoughts, which are also conditioned, but through awareness and understanding.

A thought can make theories, suppositions and doubts, but it can’t touch directly what is reality. It can only distort it.

Contemporary humans are inclined to use the function of thinking in the attempt to understand reality, but it’s an impossible and useless task, such as trying to wash our hair without pulling off the hat.

Intellect itself can only touch a symbol of reality, but not reality itself.

That’s the reason why it is so difficult to really understand  life – why and how things happen. Once we renounce the usual, ordinary approach, all becomes more clear and a little bit easier.

About mr Sarmoung

Andrea Dandolo je pisac i istražitelj razvoja svijesti i duhovnosti uključen u razotkrivanje drevnih učenja s ciljem olakšavanja unutarnjeg razvoja ljudskih bića.

ALL THAT YOU mentioned above is flawless. I would like to participate saying that we humans are evolutive beings, but only in potential. There is no mechanical evolution of man’s celeste nature. è need super-efforts, and the guidance of a true master (nowadays very hard to find). Another point is that the human machine is so rusty and conditioned that there is almost no hope even for those are engaging on the journey of inner work. I have a strong suspicion that in fact, all organic life on planet earth is as a guinea pig and hostage planetary purposes. “MANY are called, few are chosen.”
