Why it’s impossible to live the present moment and Possible Solutions to this Problem

Living the present moment is one of the main aims- perhaps the main aim- of the inner researcher, and every man who tried to live this possibility knows the difficuties of acheiving and mantaining this state. There’s a question who arises in the mind of the seeker:”Is really posible to live totally immersed in the present moment?”.

It’s not a exaggeration if we say that all our actions rises from the past …. Indeed, we can quietly affirm that it could not be otherwise, because WE are the past– the actoris the inevitable result of everything that buit him since he set foot in this world. So, is possible to clean ourselves from the baggage of the past, and live only here and now “?

In one side, the statment “living the present” is a sort of elegant and comfortable mystification often used in the contemporary society, usually used to justify an act ( driven by an emotional impulse) without responsibility: it is very easy to appeal to Horace’s Carpe Diem know when we meet a beautiful girl with whom we wish to spend one night, without any kind of “side effects”…

The question of Living the Present Moment is a very complicated issue: living this state is is quite impossible, because he changes constantly, every moment is unique and lasts for a millisecond to leave the place to another moment… we can’t  grasp continually every moment and maintaining continuously such rhythm . The present moment is a flash, and is followed by another and another and another … And we are only able to stay there, without any possibility nor time to connect those moments of life together and create a continuity, a sequence of events, a story, our life …

But, on the other side, we are a continuity in time and space, otherwise we would be unable to experience anything, leaving only infinitesimal “pieces of ourselves” unable to exist in a space-time dimension…

So, what’s the solution to this quest? There’s in the Japanese Kendo practice a practice that is at the same time a ritual called Zanshin, or Spirit of Gesture, the Spirit that remains always aware, who can act without remaining attached to anything happens in a determined moment.

Zanshin means taking care of every action we perform, remaining attentive of what could happen a moment before, and this is a mental question, awareness. In fact, to remain awake, we need to be more or less in this determined moment, in that present, not elsewhere. Foused in such way, our senses are able to catch every infinitesimal changing, almost with the same speed of the same changing. We need an empty mind, without any “before” or “after”… we need to be receptive.

And this might become the natural state in our everyday life: there’s a particular way to grasp an object, a glass, to walk, to move our arms, to write on a PC or to remain steady, fixed. We grasp an object with care, we wait a oment before taking a mouthful, when walking we pay the maximal attention on the feet as they touch the ground, etc….

In such state, the time really expands, it bacomes graspable. The milliseconds become longer, we start to perceive the situations in a expanded way, such as the protagonists of Matrix are able to see the bullets in slow motion. So we’ll be able to anticipate the speed of the present instant, and always be there, perceiving the change that happens at lightning speed, but perciving it in an elegant sort of ralenty.

Andrea Dandolo je pisac i istražitelj razvoja svijesti i duhovnosti uključen u razotkrivanje drevnih učenja s ciljem olakšavanja unutarnjeg razvoja ljudskih bića.

Thus, the Present Moment is not fixed…it continues…the Challenge is to remain “with it”… 🙂
