The Law of Seven is an ancient principle who was an integral part of the alchemical sciences as practiced during the European Middle Ages and Renaissance. This principle was known to both the Pythagoreans and Platonists. In the Fourth Way (as taught by Gurdjieff) the “Law of Seven” is described as dynamic process whereby both the Cosmos (the macro-level) and individual lives (the micro-level) of people here on Earth were in a continuous state of transformation. The “Absolute” is the fundamental source of all creation. From the “Absolute”, the process of cosmic creation evolves according to an ordered sequence of increasing complexity and density. This process follows a law involving the seven note Greek musical scale known on the macrocosmical level as the “Ray of Creation.” The universe as a whole comprises many such emanations from the Absolute. The Gurdjieff’s scheme of this Law is most different fo the Pythagorean model: it involves a relatively modern, sun centered view of the astronomical structure of the Cosmos.

In the Fouth Way Teachings the first critical point in the Human developement described as the ascension of the octave as above described is the “First Conscious Shock,” between Mi and FA: at this point, only a Conscious Labor can provide the energy necessary to pass through this critical point in the development of an individual person.

The Conscious Labor is a level of working where a man who is performing the act is not absentminded during his act, but rather is “remembering himself” the entire time and what he is doing; at the same time he is striving to perform the act more efficiently.

The Types of Conscious Labor Are:

  • The Self- Observation: striving to observe in one’s self the certain behaviors and habits which are usually only observed in others, and to observe them in one’s self as dispassionately as one may observe them in others; to observe one’s self as an interesting stranger. Another aspect is to attempt to discover in one’s self an attention that can differentiate between the actual thoughts, feelings, and sensations that are taking place at the moment, without judging or analyzing what is observed.
  • Division of attention: is the prliminary exercise tgo the following Self-Remembering. In the Fourth Way the students must cultivate the ability to divide their attention, that is the ability to remain fully focused on an external object or intellectual thought while being aware of oneself. One might, for instance, let part of one’s attention in speaking with a friend, while the other half is aware of his own presence. In the division of attention, in the initial stages one may need to go back and forth between one thing and another. However, experiencing them both fully and simultaneously is the aim.
  • The aim of the divided attention is to achieve a state called Self-Remembering, which is permanent in a “conscious” person, while fleeting and temporary in the average person. in this state a person sees what is seen ever losting sight of himself seeing. Ordinarily, when concentrating on something, people lose their sense of “I”, althought they may, as it where, passively react to the stimulus they are concentrating on. In Self-Remembering the “I” is not lost.
  • Also, is taught that awakening results from consistent, prolonged efforts. These efforts are the ones that are made after a person is already exhausted and feels that he can’t go anymore, but nevertheless he pushes himself.
  • According to the ancient Persians, men lives of three types of aliment: Food (without which one can live rrom few days to few weeks) Air (without which one can can live few minutes) and Impressions (whitout which anyone can live). The second type of conscious labor is to trasform these foods-called by Gurdjieff in his “Belzebub’s Tales to his Grandson” the Three Being Foods- in subtle substance (energy) to develop the Emotional (Kesdjan) Body.

Kroz takav razvoj individualna osoba ulazi u nove dimenzije svijesti koje mu omogućuju da vidi stvarnost sakrivenu iza iluzija. To mu omogućuje kreiranje osobnosti neovisne i otporne na vanjske situacije i vanjska uvjetovanja. Posljedice takvog razvoja su oštra inteligencija, izvanredni kreativni kapaciteti, ravnoteža i smirenost u svakoj situaciji i stabilno stanje višeg stanja svijesti koje je poznato u drevnim tradicijama pod nazivom “buđenje”.
